Xiaomi Speeds Up: New Electric SUV Expected by Year-End

Xiaomi’s debut of the SU7 sedan in China garnered immense success yesterday, yet the tech giant is already gearing up for its next venture. Recent reports from China, citing undisclosed sources, indicate that Xiaomi’s follow-up electric vehicle (EV) will be an SUV.

While the move towards SUVs is not unexpected given their global popularity, what’s surprising is the projected timeline. The report suggests that this SUV could hit the market by the year’s end—a notably swift release schedule, akin to Xiaomi’s rapid pace in the smartphone arena.

However, it’s prudent to approach this news cautiously, as such a quick turnaround is uncommon in the automotive industry, especially for a company fresh off its first car launch.

Nevertheless, Xiaomi recognizes the importance of promptly tapping into the SUV market, given its widespread demand. Many of its Chinese competitors, like Nio, Li Auto, and XPeng, prioritized SUVs as their debut models. Even now, Nio and XPeng boast extensive SUV lineups, while Li Auto exclusively produces SUVs.

Xiaomi’s decision to initially introduce a sedan may have been a strategic surprise tactic, diverging from the norm. Nonetheless, venturing into the SUV segment appears inevitable, given its prominence in the industry. Thus, it’s not entirely unexpected that an SUV will be on Xiaomi’s automotive agenda next.
