In a significant move aimed at enhancing students’ English proficiency and aligning educational standards with global benchmarks, educational boards in Punjab have announced a shift in the mode of matriculation exams. Starting from 2025, all science and arts streams for matric exams will be conducted in English.
Under this new policy, Urdu will gradually be phased out from question papers, ensuring a standardized language medium across all subjects. Additionally, beginning in 2026, all optional subjects for FA exams will also be administered in English.

While formal approval for this policy is pending, educational authorities are optimistic about its endorsement during the upcoming Punjab Boards Committee Chairmen (PBCC) meeting. However, Rana Liaqat Ali, the General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union, has expressed concerns about potential challenges associated with the language transition.
He emphasized the necessity of providing teachers with adequate training to facilitate a seamless transition and minimize the risk of student failure rates due to language barriers.
