Pakistan’s government is facing a crucial decision regarding the hosting of the 14th edition of the South Asian Games. In a recent meeting chaired by caretaker minister Muhammad Sami Saeed, the steering committee decided to seek guidance from the Foreign Office on whether to proceed with hosting the event. The decision is influenced by concerns over potential expenditures.
Hosting the South Asian Games could present an opportunity for Pakistan to showcase a positive image on the world stage and enhance regional relations through sports diplomacy. However, amidst uncertainties, it’s clear that Pakistan may not be ready to host the event in the coming months, suggesting a possible postponement for another year.

The delay stems from various factors, including the impact of COVID-19 and government delays. With the Pakistan Olympic Association previously directing the games to be held in March 2024, there is growing anticipation for a decision from the Foreign Office.
The South Asian Games are expected to involve around 5,000 athletes, with a budget of Rs. 9 billion set aside by the POA. This allocation includes funds for infrastructure development and logistical support for athletes.
Should Pakistan not receive approval from the Foreign Office, Sri Lanka stands poised to take over hosting duties, as pressure mounts from member nations of South Asia. The fate of the games hinges on Pakistan’s ability to meet hosting requirements or relinquish the rights to a more suitable host with better infrastructure.
