As promised, Lenovo took the stage at MWC 2024 Barcelona to introduce Project Crystal, touted as the world’s first laptop featuring a micro-LED display resembling something out of a sci-fi movie.
Lenovo’s Project Crystal, a concept device from its ThinkPad division, showcases a micro-LED screen and AI innovation enabling a see-through display. This innovative feature could find practical use in settings like doctor’s offices or hotel reception desks, eliminating the need to physically flip the screen for viewers on the opposite side to access information.
Integrating a rear camera in the system opens doors to potential augmented reality (AR) applications akin to Google Lens functionality. The transparent display presents opportunities for overlaying diagrams or schematics onto objects, aiding tasks such as troubleshooting or repair.

Despite the thinness of the transparent screen and its ordinary appearance when turned off, it can illuminate up to 3000 nits of brightness with a press of a button. Lenovo is contemplating adding a contrast layer to function like a conventional laptop screen when desired.
Project Crystal features Lenovo’s touch-based keyboard replacements, reminiscent of earlier Yoga Books, although it faces challenges like lack of tactile feedback, which results in typing inaccuracies. Lenovo plans to address this issue using AI to adapt to users’ typing habits.
Despite some drawbacks like limited ports, an older CPU, a weak hinge, and static charge issues, Project Crystal remains a concept device showcasing innovative display technology, with the other aspects presenting it as a laptop package.
