Human Rights Foundation Concerns in Imran Khan’s Cipher Case Conviction

The International Human Rights Foundation has expressed grave reservations regarding the conviction of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case. The organization has raised concerns about the disregard for fundamental principles of justice throughout the legal process.

In a recent development, Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and Qureshi were handed a 10-year prison sentence in the cipher case. The verdict was delivered by Judge Abu Alhasnaat Zulqurnain at Adiala Jail, where they were found guilty of leaking state secrets, specifically related to the alleged retention and communication of a classified diplomatic cable sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the US.

The International Human Rights Foundation conducted a comprehensive review of the legal proceedings and expressed deep unease over the failure to adhere to basic principles of justice and due process. The organization’s statement highlighted several troubling issues, including the denial of access to chosen legal counsel, closed-door trial proceedings, and the prohibition of cross-examining prosecution witnesses. These actions were deemed clear violations of rights established in international law, including the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The foundation’s statement also raised questions about the potential exaggeration of charges against Khan and Qureshi, suggesting a possible political agenda behind their prosecution. It emphasized that such practices not only erode the credibility of the legal system but also contravene fundamental principles of justice and fairness outlined in international human rights law. The lack of transparency and impartiality in the trials was seen as casting doubt on the rule of law and the administration of justice in the country.

The International Human Rights Foundation has called unequivocally for an immediate halt to the trial proceedings against Imran Khan and Qureshi. The organization has urged the dismissal of all charges and the immediate release of the accused from custody. Furthermore, it has advocated for a thorough and impartial investigation to determine the criminal responsibility of those involved in what it views as a “miscarriage of justice.”

In essence, the foundation’s concerns extend beyond the legal intricacies of the case to encompass broader implications for justice, human rights, and the rule of law in the country. The call for a comprehensive investigation underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in legal proceedings, ensuring that justice is served in accordance with international standards.
