European Union Joins US and UK in Expressing Concerns Over Transparency of Pakistan’s 8th February General Elections.
In an official statement, the European Union (EU) acknowledged the completion of the polling in Pakistan’s general elections held on February 8th. The EU highlighted the challenges faced, including a tense security environment and systemic barriers for women and minority voters. Despite these challenges, the EU noted the commitment to democracy demonstrated by Pakistani voters.
However, the EU expressed regret over the lack of a level playing field, citing restrictions on political actors, freedom of assembly, expression both online and offline, and internet access. Allegations of electoral interference and arrests of political activists were also noted. The EU called for a thorough investigation into reported irregularities and urged the implementation of recommendations from an upcoming EU Election Expert Mission report.

Addressing terrorist threats and attacks leading up to the elections, the EU condemned violence and urged all parties to resolve differences peacefully. Emphasizing the importance of democratic values, independent media, civil society, judicial independence, and human rights standards, the EU called for inclusive dialogue and respect for human rights in line with Pakistan’s Constitution and international treaties.
The EU reiterated Pakistan’s importance as a partner and expressed readiness to collaborate on agreed priorities under the EU-Pakistan Strategic Engagement Plan. Encouraging continued reforms in human rights, governance, labor rights, and environmental standards, the EU urged Pakistan to address shortcomings outlined in the GSP+ report of November 2023 and pursue necessary economic reforms.
