Usman Khan, who had recently switched his cricketing allegiance from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) back to Pakistan, has received a five-year suspension from the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). This ban restricts him from participating in any events organized by the ECB, including prominent tournaments like the ILT20 and the Abu Dhabi T10, as well as other competitions affiliated with the ECB in the UAE until 2029.

The ECB announced that the decision was made after finding Usman in violation of his commitments to the board. Specifically, Usman was accused of misleading the ECB about his intentions to play for the UAE team. The board expressed disappointment, noting that Usman utilized the training and opportunities provided by the ECB to explore other opportunities, showing a lack of interest in fulfilling the requirements needed to represent the UAE.
The severity of the punishment reflects the ECB’s strong stance on the matter, surprising many given Usman’s prior trajectory towards meeting UAE’s qualification criteria. He had participated as a local player in the UAE’s Abu Dhabi T10 and ILT20 leagues and, more recently, competed as an overseas player in Pakistan’s Super League (PSL).
Usman’s standout performance in the PSL, where he became the second-highest run-scorer with two centuries in just seven games, reignited his prospects of playing for Pakistan. Despite earlier indications of disinterest in representing Pakistan, he accepted an invitation to join a Pakistan squad training camp following his PSL success.
In response to the ECB’s actions, Usman argued that he had not violated any contracts, pointing out that his agreement allowed for termination upon 30 days’ notice. He accepted the ECB’s decision, motivated by the opportunity to represent Pakistan, especially with the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies on the horizon.
The implications of the ban on Usman’s work permit status in the UAE remain uncertain. However, this development effectively ends his chances of playing for the UAE. His focus now shifts to Pakistan’s forthcoming T20I series against New Zealand and the upcoming T20 World Cup, where he hopes to make a significant impact for Pakistan.
