Babar Azam Meets PCB Chief to Discuss Future Role

On Thursday, Babar Azam, renowned Pakistani cricketer and former national team captain, met with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The meeting occurred shortly after the PCB Selection Committee put forth Babar Azam’s name as a candidate for the next captaincy role of the national squad. During the meeting between Babar Azam and Mohsin Naqvi, discussions revolved around preparations for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup and the preceding cricket series.

Sources indicate that Naqvi had tasked the Selection Committee with proposing candidates for the appointment of a new captain for the Pakistan cricket team. The committee has since submitted its recommendations to the PCB chairman, including Babar’s name among other cricketers for consideration as the next captain.

This development unfolded within less than five months after Babar Azam was relieved of his captaincy duties in all three formats. Shaheen Shah Afridi replaced him as the captain of the T20 team and Shan Masood as the Test team captain.

On November 15, 2023, the PCB announced Shan Masood’s appointment as captain until the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25. Shan’s inaugural task was leading the team in a three-match Test series against Australia in Australia, which resulted in a clean sweep by Australia.

Simultaneously, the PCB revealed that left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah would take on the leadership role for the Pakistan Men’s Team in the T20I format. His debut as captain was slated for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand from April 18 to 27.
