Elon Musk Announces Open Sourcing of “Grok” Chatbot Amid Legal Dispute with OpenAI
On Monday, Elon Musk declared that his AI venture, xAI, would release its ChatGPT rival, “Grok,” as an open-source project this week. This decision follows Musk’s legal action against OpenAI, alleging a departure from their original mission towards profit-driven motives.
Musk, a vocal critic of tech giants like Google, consistently warns against the exploitation of technology for financial gain.
Earlier this month, Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the organization three years later, filed a lawsuit against the Microsoft-backed entity.
In response, OpenAI released emails suggesting Musk’s support for a for-profit venture and interest in merging with an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to enhance profitability.
Musk announced the Grok release on X, stating, “This week, @xAI will open-source Grok.”

This move offers the public unrestricted access to experiment with the technology’s underlying code, aligning xAI with companies like Meta and France’s Mistral, known for their open-source AI models.
Additionally, Google’s recent release of an AI model named Gemma provides external developers an opportunity to customize it to their needs.
Since Musk initiated the lawsuit against ChatGPT’s developer, tech investors like Vinod Khosla, a supporter of OpenAI, and Marc Andreessen, co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, have debated the merits of open-sourcing AI.
While open-sourcing technology can accelerate innovation, some experts warn that open-source AI models could be exploited by malicious actors, potentially leading to the creation of chemical weapons or the development of conscious super-intelligence beyond human oversight.
