Xiaomi’s flagship smartphones have featured in-display optical fingerprint sensors for several years. A similar trend has been observed with OnePlus devices. However, indications suggest a potential shift next year with the Xiaomi 15 series and OnePlus 13.
Reports from two separate sources on Weibo often considered China’s equivalent of Twitter, suggest that Xiaomi is currently exploring the integration of ultrasonic fingerprint sensors in its upcoming Xiaomi 15 flagship lineup, which is currently under development.
In addition to an upgraded fingerprint sensor, the Xiaomi 15 is expected to retain a flat screen like its predecessor. Meanwhile, the 15 Ultra will continue the trend of having a curved screen.

As mentioned, OnePlus will transition to ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, starting with the OnePlus 13. This move will align OnePlus with Samsung and Vivo flagships that utilize these fingerprint sensors, known for their improved speed and accuracy.
While these developments are still in their early stages, with anticipated launches towards the end of the year in China and potentially early 2025 internationally, it’s important to note that details may evolve. Nonetheless, the prospect of seeing ultrasonic fingerprint readers on more handsets is certainly an exciting one.
Like the Xiaomi 14, the Xiaomi 15 is expected to debut in October in China, while the OnePlus 13 will likely be officially announced in early 2025. Both phones are expected to reach international markets a few months after their Chinese launch. Additionally, the phones are anticipated to feature the next-generation Qualcomm flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC.
