Multiple Landslides Cause Blockage on Karakoram Highway

Intermittent rain and snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan have disrupted daily life, with reports indicating that landslides have obstructed both the Karakoram Highway and Baltistan Road at multiple points. Consequently, travelers to and from Gilgit-Baltistan find themselves stranded, unable to proceed. Plummeting temperatures and the suspension of electricity supply exacerbate the situation.

According to officials, rain and snowfall persisted until evening, commencing in lower areas and progressing to higher altitudes on Monday morning. Landslides, triggered by the precipitation, have led to blockages along the Karakoram Highway at various locations, including Achar Nallah in Kohistan and the Thore area, due to rockfalls.

Numerous tourists, including vulnerable groups such as children, women, and senior citizens, are stuck on either side of the Karakoram Highway, with hundreds of vehicles stranded at Achar Nallah in Kohistan. Additionally, heavy snowfall has rendered the Baltistan Road impassable at several spots in the Roundu area of Skardu.

Furthermore, landslides have caused blockages on the Ghizer-Shandur Road in the Bargho area, isolating link roads in upper regions and inter-district routes.

Snowfall accumulations ranging from three to six inches have been reported in the upper areas of Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Skardu, Shigar, Kharmang, Astore, and Ghanche. As a consequence, flights between Islamabad and Skardu and Gilgit have been suspended.
