Karachi Board Announces Additional Marks for Student

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has opted to provide a maximum of 15% extra marks to students in pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science for part I examinations.

This decision was prompted by directives from Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar. The caretaker CM endorsed the findings of a fact-finding committee tasked with investigating unusually low marks awarded to intermediate part-I students this year.

Following the committee’s report submission, the BIEK’s in-charge of the IT section was relieved of their duties. Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar explained that the decision to allocate additional marks was based on the committee’s recommendations.

“It has been decided that all students will receive 15 extra marks in Maths, 12 in Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics each, and six in Zoology and Botany each,” he stated.

Furthermore, the committee suggested implementing paper patterns and a marking scheme at the beginning of each academic year, with these guidelines remaining effective for three years.

The caretaker CM instructed officials to increase the number of paper inspection centers to 10 in Karachi. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of using an optical marks recognition system to review multiple-choice question papers, aiming to eradicate errors. CM Baqar stressed the importance of training for all staff, including head examiners, examiners, and invigilators.

“The controller of examinations, all deputy controllers, and the IT manager are tasked with overseeing the 2023 examinations,” he affirmed.

According to BIEK’s January 23rd results, 80% of candidates failed in Arts (regular), 72% in Arts (private), and 63% in Commerce (private) groups. Previous results indicated a success rate of only 36.51% for pre-medical candidates, 34.79% for pre-engineering candidates, and 38.69% for computer science candidates.
